Cinema Beans: Citadel
I mean, Citadel basically stole the idea from Attack the Block, with those strange little creatures that represent Tommy’s agoraphobia. But in comparison with Attack the Block, they, like, don’t A) look as cool, or B) don’t do a very good job of hitting home the message. In Attack the Block, the aliens represent a larger struggle to gain societal acceptance. In Citadel, the creatures are just for...shock factor. For a few good scares. So why not? Throw the Attack the Block aliens in there. You can leave the Citadel creatures, I guess. At least the movie would be more interesting.
I just feel like...and I feel like this with a lot of movies...they could have used some surrealism or absurdism or impressionism or expressionism, any aspect of modernism. When they stay too...realistic...I feel they feel confined. I feel confined. But when you break expectations by introducing some -ism that isn’t realism...I think you start to generate power and momentum. Hence why something like Attack the Block becomes an international cult hit.
