Cinema Beans: Jiro Dreams of Sushi
Sooooo yeah I actually didn't see any movies in 3D this year? I saw Titanic, but I’m not going to hand anymore undeserving awards to James Cameron if I can help myself. I'm thankful I caught the 2D version of The Lorax, since I was already *this close* to axing myself off while watching it. But Jiro is a visually striking film, and I think it would have been a bad-ass 3D documentary. I mean, who can make that claim? With beautiful films flooding with lush landscapes such as Nostalgia for the Light and Cave of Forgotten Dreams, how has this not happened? Or maybe this is a bad idea...I was already depressed after watching this movie because I’ll never actually get to eat Jiro’s sushi. Would 3D just make it worse? Yeah, actually it would. I don’t think I could handle the food floating in front of my face. In fact, director David Geld should’ve pulled a Spy Kids 4 and employed some scratch & sniff cards. I might’ve just gone ahead and flown to Japan at that point.
MMI: Life of Pi
I don't think Life of Pi is a very good movie. The frame narrative is silly. The final scene is ridiculous (look, I have a wife and a kid!). The island in the shape of Buddha is...cheesy. But. The movie is pretty. There were a few shots were I was like “wowwwwwwwwwww”. I don’t think I HAD to see the movie in 3D. But I don’t think any of the other 3D movies this year were good uses of 3D. Maybe The Hobbit did a better job than this? But that’s simply because of the 48 FPS. If we look at just 3D and just shot selection...I think Pi beats Hobbit. But neither come close to the utilization of 3D that Avatar and Hugo had. Hugo still reigns supreme.
